Van der Sloot offered contradictory stories of what happened to Natalee over the years. He claimed in 2008 that she had died the morning of her death and that a neighbor had dumped her corpse. He also alleged to have sold the American adolescent as a sex slave. However, the Dutch student later withdrew all of these statements.

Despite this, Beth remained stubborn about accusing van der Sloot’s role in her daughter’s disappearance. She then gave the Dutch student $25,000 in a last-ditch desperation attempt. The money served as a down payment since Beth had promised van der Sloot a total of $250,000 if he could include some information about Natalee’s whereabouts.
