The American flag is the symbol of the country. Needless to say, it deserves nothing but great respect. Soldiers know this better than anyone, which is why you will find them standing upright and saluting the flag the moment it is raised.

Back To The Wall
In the military, it is hard to find a better position than one with your back towards the wall. This might be the safest spot since it ensures that there will be no threats coming from behind you. That said, the only source of threat will come from in front. Soldiers like to go for seats in the back for this very reason. This practice is something that ex-military people tend to keep.
